Our
Story

Harvest to Garnish was launched by two Kitchener locals, Asiya Ali and Samira Nur, in May 2024. We sought to explore the intersection of culture and cultivation through food literacy programming for youth. Click the button below to learn more about our mission and vision

Our Initiatives

August 2024

Last summer, we transformed the way youth experience food. Over four weeks, local teens dove into the vibrant world of gardening and cooking—from planting microgreens to crafting cultural dishes like Somali suqaar and First Nations Three Sisters Soup. By focusing on sustainability, food security, and culinary creativity, the program is empowering the next generation with lifelong skills and a new appreciation for where their food comes from. Check out our detailed blog post about the initiative.

Last fall, we took students from Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute on a field trip that blended ecological education with hands-on culinary learning. From harvesting apples at a local orchard to preparing apple-marinated chicken at the Kitchener Market’s commercial kitchen, this immersive experience offered students a unique look at sustainable food systems and local agriculture. Curious about what they learned and cooked? Check out our detailed blog post about the initiative.
